every west point student deserves to feel safe at school.
we are west point.
West Point schools should be places of learning, growth, and community—not fear. That’s why we’re calling on the West Point School Board to adopt a Safe Zone Resolution and district policy to ensure schools are protected spaces for all students, regardless of immigration status.
what is a safe zone resolution?
A Safe Zone Resolution is a formal commitment by the school district to:
Prohibit ICE agents from entering school grounds without a signed judicial warrant.
Protect student and family information from being shared with immigration enforcement.
Provide staff training to support immigrant students and families.
Create a welcoming, inclusive environment for all students.
It’s that simple, and you can read it here.
why west point needs this policy
West Point is a proud and diverse community, and our schools reflect the strength of our shared values. Yet, immigrant families often face unique challenges that make it hard for children to focus on learning. By passing a Safe Zone Resolution, we can:
Build trust between families and schools.
Ensure all children have equal access to education without fear.
Create a more united and supportive community.

SAFE ZONE FAQs
-
No. Safe Zone policies are about protecting the integrity of our schools as places of learning and community. They comply with federal law while setting clear guidelines for protecting students and families.
-
Countless school districts across the country have already passed SAFE ZONE resolutions. These districts include large urban districts like Los Angeles, to small rural districts in Colorado and New Hampshire, and everywhere in between, such as Omaha, Nebraska, and Louisville, Kentucky. You can see them all on a map, here.
-
Students who feel safe are better able to learn, participate, and succeed. Safe Zone policies create an environment where every child can thrive.
-
The West Point school board can take up a proposed resolution like the one we are advocating for at its next regularly scheduled meeting. Through the board’s normal governance procedure, it can approve and sign a SAFE ZONE resolution, including a policy that would then take effect immediately.
-
No, unless you wish to add support beyond NEA’s template that we are advocating for, such as adding a counselor for extra support for immigrant students who are in crisis. The template SAFE ZONE resolution reaffirms and clarifies the constitutional right all students have, regardless of immigration status, to access a free public K-12 education. The district administration will need to take steps to ensure the resolution’s requirements are being fulfilled as outlined in the district policy attached to the NEA template SAFE ZONE board resolution, but it does not add new or different job duties or hours for educators.
